A group of robbers smashed a Volvo wheel loader into a Chanel store on Stockholm's upmarket Birger Jarlsgatan early on Tuesday morning. Radio Sweden spoke to Stockholm commuters taking photos on their mobile phones of the unusual sight.

According to the Expressen tabloid, police were alerted to the smash-and-grab raid at 4.43am, with witnesses reporting a gang of half-a-dozen thieves attempting to ram their way into the shop.

Although the machine smashed a window, it did not manage to break through the protective grille behind it, and the thieves apparently left the scene without a lucratic haul of designer handbags.
