A bus carrying children on their way to a ski resort crashed in the northern county of Härjedalen on Sunday morning. Three children died, the police confirmed on Monday.

The bus, carrying school children aged around 14 on their way to a ski resort in Jämtland, crashed at around 7am on Sunday on the E45 road between Sveg and Fågelsjö. They had been travelling all night from the Ängskolan school in Skene in south-west Sweden when the accident occurred.

“It was like a war zone initially. There were children being treated in the ditches and practically everywhere,” said Peter Nystedt at the Rescue Service.

Three people died, all of whom were children, the police confirmed on Monday morning. Six people were seriously injured. 19 people were moderately injured, and 31 were mildly injured or unharmed.

“I have been reached by the terrible news of the bus accident near Sveg. It leaves me, and the entire country, in mourning,” Prime Minister Stefan Löfven said.

The bus was carrying a total of 59 passengers: 52 children aged around 14, and 7 adults.

11 people are still being treated at the Östersund hospital.
