Wallström condemns "horrific" Bangladeshi police brutality
Sweden's Foreign Minister Margot Wallström is shaken by the secret recording that reveal the methods used by the elite police force in Bangladesh. In the recording, obtained by Swedish Radio, a high-ranking officer describes how they kill and abduct people.
"There is only one thing to say about this: that it's horrific and that it must stop and that Bangladesh must take responsibility for this."
"Unfortunately it confirms what we have already heard from human rights organisations in Bangladesh for a while," she added.
She pledged to use all bilateral contacts with Bangladesh to voice her concerns and said that the Swedish Minister for Justice Morgan Johansson had already done so on an earlier visit to Bangladesh last year.
"In particular, we will act as part of the EU, but we also have the possibility to act as part of our work with human rights and human rights reports, that we are currently compiling ," she said.
The speaker of the Swedish parliament, Urban Ahlin, is presently in Bangladesh to meet representatives of the Bangladeshi government.
Margot Wallström said she "assumes that this is a topic that will come up, because you cannot ignore this type of information now that it has been confirmed".
So will you take an initiative regarding the elite police force Rapid Action Battalion, RAB, in Bangladesh and what they evidently appear to be doing? asked Swedish Radio's reporter.
"We will act, in particular via the EU, but also through our bilateral contacts, to make it completely clear that this is not acceptable, and must stop immediately," she said.
