Three men sent to prison for ”Facebook rape”
After a rape was reportedly broadcast live to a Facebook group, three young men have been sentenced to prison.
An 18-year-old has been sentenced to one year for rape; a 21-year-old gets two years and four months for rape; and a 24-year-old, who filmed the attack, has received six months for aggravated slander and failing to report a rape. They will also have to pay more than SEK 330,000 in damages to the victim.
Judge Nils Pålbrant told us "the damages to the victim were larger because of the wide distribution of the film".
The police started investigating after a member of a 60,000-strong Facebook group reported seeing a rape broadcast live. The filming was interrupted when police arrived at the apartment in Uppsala. The trial began on 11 April and is the first of its kind in Sweden.
The defence lawyer for the 21-year-old, Stefan Wallin, says he is surprised at the sentence and will probably appeal. He says he does not see how the police can prove that his client committed a rape.
Prosecutor Magnus Berggren had called for a sentence of at least three years for the rape charge. People under 21 often get a reduced sentence from Sweden’s courts.
