Sweden runner-up in press freedom ranking
Sweden snags second place on Reporters Without Borders - World Press Freedom Index for 2017.
It is a notable improvement from last year when Sweden came in eighth in the rankings.
Concrete efforts by authorities to prevent and punish harassment of reporters is one of the major reasons for the jump in rankings, according to Jonathan Lundquist, the head of Reporters Without Borders - Sweden.
“We were happy to see that during 2016 there were a couple of sentences passed out to people who have threatened journalists, and that they were actually sentenced to time in prison,” he said. “That is a positive signal to send.”
