Why America wants to be allies with Sweden
Sweden was warmly welcomed by America's Secretary of Defence this week. The former general of the Marines, James Mattis, said that Sweden is an ally and the USA would stand with Sweden if there was an attack.
But why is the USA so eager to declare Sweden an ally?
The Social Democrat-led government is proudly "alliance-free" and spends less than the Nato minimum of 2 percent of GDP on defence.
The Swedish Atlantic Committee is a group that works for closer Swedish-US ties. Anna Wieslander at the committee says there are strong reasons for the USA to want to be close to Sweden.
