A Swedish-Turkish left-wing journalist wanted by the Turkish authorities will not be handed over, reports Swedish Television news.

The man, Hamza Yalcin, had been arrested in Spain in August and was held in Madrid awaiting extradition to Turkey.

Now the Spanish court has released him while it makes a final decision. The suspected is wanted by Turkey on an Interpol arrest warrant accused of leading a terrorist group. He has denied the charge.

His supporters include Liberal Party MEP Cecilia Wikström, and Swedish writers’ association for free speech PEN. They say he is being targeted for his criticism of the Turkish government.
