Fewest Smokers in Europe

Published tisdag 27 september 2005 kl 11.51

The newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” reports that Swedish men are the best in Europe in quitting smoking.

According to new figures from Statistics Sweden and the World Health Organization, only 15 percent of men here smoke daily. At the other end of the scale, 51 percent of Latvian men are regular smokers. In most European countries, twice as many men smoke as in Sweden.

Best here are Stockholmers. Only 12 percent of men and 13 percent of women in the capital smoke daily. The experts say there is a core group, however, who have smoked for a long time and have a hard time quitting. These include low income women, who usually aren’t involved in sports activities, and many immigrants.
