Shocking Reading Statistics At School
One in Five Swedish pupils from years 7 to 9 say they never read books in school.
Amongst the boys age group, 25 percent admitted in a questionaire by the national union of teachers, to have never read a book in school. The majority read one to three books per year.
Speaking at today’s book fair in Gothenburg, Metta Fjelkner, from the union, said the problem was ” worse than they thought.” To reverse the trend, the union is calling for lower class sizes in order to spend more time individually with pupils. It’s also calling for a library in every school with more books combined with a national campaign to promote reading.
