Sweden Unprepared for Pandemics
The National Board of Health and Welfare says Sweden is poorly prepared to deal with global epidemics.
Against the background of current concerns about Avian influenza, the board has found several weak points in Swedish preparedness. Chief among them is the inability of the Swedish health authorities to procure vaccines on short notice.
A report from the World Health Organization last week said Sweden has the second worst record of influenza vaccination in the western countries. At the time, the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control said that this would make it difficult to get enough stocks of new vaccines in time to deal with a potential pandemic.
