Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson and his visiting Czech counterpart Jiri Paroubek say they are confident that European public opinion will turn in favor of Turkish membership in the EU.

Opinion polls have shown that not one EU country has a majority that supports Turkey joining the union. Both Persson and his Czech counterpart say they support the EU’s decision Monday to start talks with Turkey.

But, they add, the polls are a sign from the public that it is not possible to hurry the accession of Turkey to the EU.
