More Subway Chaos Likely

Published fredag 7 oktober 2005 kl 10.56

Stockholm seems poised to endure more public transport chaos, but probably not until next week.

On Thursday afternoon Connex, the French company that runs the capital’s subway system, confirmed it is firing the head of the local union. The announcement followed apparently fruitless talks with union representatives, and a wildcat strike among drivers that more or less closed down the system during the morning rush hour.

Connex says the union leader has been disloyal and has insulted other employees, but has declined to provide examples. The union says the fired leader was just doing his job, drawing attention to serious safety issues.

The case will probably go to the labor courts, but drivers have vowed they will repeat their industrial action next week.
