Nobel Lit Prize Rapped in Academy Protest
A member of the Swedish Academy says he is resigning in protest over last year’s selection of Austrian Elfriede Jelinek for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Writing in the newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet” Tuesday, Knut Ahnlund calls Jelinek’s work “parasitic” and “without a trade of artistic structure”. He says the selection “caused irreparable damage to all progressive forces”.
In response, the Secretary of the Swedish Academy has issued a press release calling the attack “pseudo news” and says Ahnlund has not taken part in the Academy’s work since 1996. This year’s Literature Prize will be announced on Thursday.
