EU Vice President Wants More Openness and Democracy
European Commission Vice President Margot Wallström is calling for the EU to be more effective, open and democratic.
Writing in the newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” Wednesday, the Swedish commissioner says the parliaments of member countries should have a greater role. Wallström says the rejections of the proposed EU constitution by the voters of France and the Netherlands was a wake-up call.
She says there needs to be more EU involvement in some areas, such as fighting crime, terrorism, and the sex trade. But the commission vice president says there should also be a lesser role in others, with less centralized control.
