Sweden To Send Team To Earthquake Simulation
Sweden’s sending a disaster response team to Sicily this weekend where a simulated earthquake will take place.
The exercise, which includes teams from Greece to Italy, will test search and rescue skills in response to a natural disaster such as an earthquake.
It’s all part of the European Civil protection Mechanism that coordinates assistance from 30 european countries.
EU environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, who’s overseeing the exercise, said, ”The lessons from Hurricane Katrina and last year’s tsunami are that catastrophic natural disasters can strike anywhere and at any time. Earthquakes can reduce any community to almost nothing in minutes, and while we have to hope for the best, we need to prepare for the worst.”
