Early Retirement Can Lead To Early Death

Publicerat fredag 14 oktober 2005 kl 10.50

It might be many people’s dream to retire early with more than enough to live on, but the results of a swedish study show that an early retirement can seriously damage your health.

The joint study by Linköping University and Karolinska Institute has revealed that men and women who retire early are twice as likely to die earlier than the rest of the population.

The study was conducted over 12 years, covering nearly a quarter of a million people in the county of Östergötland.

They found that the risk of dying early was 2 and a half times higher among women who retired early and 2.8 times higher among men who retired early.

The researchers gave two explanations, firstly, that the health factors which lead to early retirement are many and complex, and secondly, that the social isolation of early retirement can have a negative influence on health.
