EU To Hold Emergency Talks About Bird Flu Threat
Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds will next week take part in emergency talks about the growing bird flu threat.
The extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers will take place in Luxembourg on Tuesday amid growing fears about the spread of bird flu into Europe, after a deadly strain of it was confirmed in Turkey and suspected in Romania.
The virus, which has caused more than 60 deaths in Asia since 2003, appears to be spreading westwards with migrating birds.
Turkey’s environment ministry today decided to ban the hunting of wild birds across the country.
The World Health Organization issued a statement saying that it was concerned about the spread of a deadly strain of bird flu to new areas, but kept its alert level for a human influenza pandemic unchanged.
