World’s First Biogas Train

Published tisdag 25 oktober 2005 kl 11.13

The world’s first train to run on biogas made its maiden voyage here in Sweden Monday.

Biogas is a renewable energy source made from organic wastes. The train, which links Linköping, just south of Stockholm, with Västervik, 80 kilometers away on the Baltic coast, is scheduled to initially make one trip a day.

Consisting of a single carriage that seats around 60 passengers, the vehicle is a converted Fiat train whose diesel engines have been replaced by two Volvo gas engines. It carries enough gas to run for 600 kilometers, reaching a maximum speed of 130 kilometers an hour.
