Former Cross-Country Ski Champ Per Elofsson Retires
One of the most well known and enigmatic cross-country skiers in Sweden has announced his retirement after being absent from the sport for almost two years.
At a press conference at Arlanda airport, Per Elofsson, who’s still only 28, said he’d given up any hope of making a comeback at the top level. Elofsson, from Northern Sweden, dropped out of the sport in 2003 , saying that he’d worked his body too hard in training. He was world champion three times and World Cup overall champion in 2001 and 2002 and there had been hopes amongst the Swedish public that he’d return to the top at next year’s winter Olympics in Turin. But Olofsson told the press that he’d done everything he could to make a comeback and was now ”hanging up his skis.”
