Social Democrat Congress Approves Gay Marriage

Published måndag 31 oktober 2005 kl 11.33
Prime Minister Göran Persson addresses the Social Democrat conference

Sweden’s ruling Social Democrats began their party congress during the weekend, in the southern city of Malmö.

Prime Minister Göran Persson promised in his opening address a major increase in support for the elderly. This was repeated by Health and Welfare Minister Ylva Johansson, who also called for gender-orientation neutral marriage, which was approved by a vote of congress delegates.

The foreign affairs program passed by the conference calls for reforms in the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and proposes trans-national taxation of multi-national companies.

The motion also criticized the United States for maintaining the death penalty and for its opposition to the International Criminal Court.
