Freivalds Condemns Violence in Ethiopia

Published torsdag 3 november 2005 kl 12.14

Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds has condemned the ongoing violence in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Abeba.

An uneasy calm returned to the capital Thursday, a day after riot police across the city fired guns to quell a second day of protests against Ethiopia’s disputed parliamentary elections.

According to doctors and health workers there, police killed at least 23 people and wounded dozens more.

In a statement Frievalds urged the Ethiopian government to maintain law and order, and to make sure that the maintenance of such should be carried out with in the framework of justice and human rights.

She also urged the Ethiopian government to release opposition leaders from prison as to avoid any escalation of the situation there.
