Supreme Court Hears Gay-bashing Appeal

Pastor Åke Green at a pre-hearing demonstration

The Swedish Supreme Court heard the case Wednesday of a Pentacostal pastor who denounced homosexuals from the pulpit as a “cancerous tumor”.

Åke Green became the first clergyman convicted under Sweden’s hate crimes legislation, which was extended two years ago to include attacks against gays. An appeals court overturned the ruling earlier this year, and the case was taken to the highest court by the state prosecutor.

The 64 year old Green told the Supreme Court homosexuality is an abnormality on a par with pedophilia. The hearing is expected to take one day, but the ruling could take several weeks.
