More Aid to Iraq

The Swedish Embassy in Baghdad

Sweden is increasing assistance for the reconstruction of Iraq, and the government is planning to send a financial expert to Baghdad.

Fifty million dollars in aid to Iraq has already been approved for the three year period 2004-2006. Those funds have primarily been channeled through the United Nations and the World Bank.

Now the Swedish government is contributing a further 2.5 million dollars to the United Nations Development Program.

The Swedish expert is to head a program at the Iraqi Planning Ministry, seeking to manage the development funds flooding into the country. According to the Swedish Foreign Ministry, in many cases aid is not matching the priorities of the Iraqi government.
