Sörenstam, Marta, Frisk Honored
Top-ranked women’s golfer Annika Sörenstam has been chosen as the Swedish Player of the Year for a record 9th time.
This year Sörenstam won 11 out of 21 tournaments she entered, including 10 on the LPGA tour.
Last week she won the European Gold Writers’ Trophy for the second time in three years, the first woman to claim the award more than once.
In other sports award news, Brazil’s Marta da Silva, who plays for the Swedish team Umeå, finished runner-up for FIFA’s Women Soccer Player of the Year, behind Germany’s Birgit Prinz.
FIFA’s President’s Award has gone to Sweden’s former international referee Anders Frisk, who retired in March when he received death threats after officiating in Barcelona’s controversial 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League.
