New Year’s Violence

A man was knifed to death in this building New Year's Eve

There were an unusual number of disturbances in Sweden on New Year’s Eve.

Several injuries have been reported related to heavy drinking, fights, and gang violence. One man was stabbed to death at a party in a northern Stockholm suburb. In another suburb, south of the city, 5 men in their twenties were detained by police after a gang of around 30 attacked a private party, throwing firecrackers and assaulting several people.

Similar incidents have been reported from other locations around the country.

Several houses were set on fire by private fireworks, either accidentally or on purpose. Police now say that a Mormon church that burned in Gothenburg a couple of days before the end of the year was probably set on fire by a fireworks rocket.
