Removing Improperly Obtained Citizenship

Published onsdag 25 januari 2006 kl 11.28

A government commissioned study recommends that it should be possible to remove Swedish citizenship from people who have obtained it unlawfully.

The problem emerged several months ago when it was reported that officials here took bribes to approve citizenship for people who should have barred because of criminal backgrounds. Under current law, even if they obtained citizenship improperly, it cannot be taken away from them.

For the recommendation to go into effect, the Swedish constitution has to be amended, a process that stretches out over two parliamentary elections.
