Swedish Politicians: Hamas Must Refrain From Violence

Published fredag 27 januari 2006 kl 13.48

Swedish reaction: concern and surprise after the radical Islamist movement Hamas swept to victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections.

Swedish politicians are in agreement that Hamas must refrain from using violence.

Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds said for continued ties with this country, a Hamas led government must step away from violence and accept Israel’s right to exist.

Freivalds said she believes the Palestinian people want peace and used the election to voice their dissatisfaction with previous political developments.

Voicing the strongest reaction here, the Liberal Party has called for Sweden to freeze aid to Palestinian authorities without delay, saying anything else would be a legitimization of terrorism and Israel Hate.
