DNA Testing for Asylum Seekers?

Published torsdag 2 februari 2006 kl 13.57

The Swedish immigration authority wants to begin free DNA testing for asylum seekers hoping to be reunited with family already in Sweden

In her proposal, Migration Minister, Barbro Holmberg said the DNA testing would be on a voluntary basis only.

The move comes after migration authorities brought attention to the fact last year that many children that are brought into the country together with asylum seekers that are not their biological parents.

Something that has lead to custody problems in the event of divorce and legal battles over the rights of individual children.

Meanwhile, the country’s child ombudsman has expressed doubts about the proposal.
