A high-ranking Swedish officer has been appointed as head of the Nordic observer mission to Sri Lanka.

Retired Brigadier General Ulf Henricsson will take over from the mission’s current Norwegian commander on April 1st. Norway is also mediating in the peace process, and the Sri Lankan government objected to the Norwegians acting as both peace mediators and heading the truce observers.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission was set up four years ago to ensure that the ceasefire between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels is respected. There are 14 Swedes among the 60 observers.
