Social Democrat Staff Member Behind Smear Campaign

A member of staff at the ruling Social Democrats’ party headquarters was behind an email smear campaign targeting the leader of the opposition Moderate Party, Fredrik Reinfeldt.

Reinfeldt has received emails for several weeks now, which amongst other things, accuse his family of hiring illegal labour.

The Social Democrats’ party secretary, Marita Ulvskog, has apologised. According to the party secretary, only one person was involved. She has said that the incident was completely unacceptable and ”contrary to the party’s political culture and ethical rules”. But opposition leaders believe the campaign was organised.

The news comes as a poll Friday shows that if an election was called today the Social Democrats and their parliamentary allies would lose power. Recent polls have given conflicting indications on the outcome of the country’s September general election.
