EU Lifts Beef Ban
After the European commission’s first confirmed case of BSE in Sweden, the European Union has now approved the lifting of a decade-old ban on British beef. The ban was triggered by the mid-1990s mad cow crisis.
The EU’s executive arm said the decision was expected to be implemented in about six weeks’ time, after it has been approved by experts from the bloc’s 25 member states.
The epidemic was first identified in 1986 and about 185,000 BSE cases have been confirmed in Britain since.
Sweden was long spared any cases of BSE and now nearly all EU states have reported BSE cases.
