Annika Sorenstam began the new golfing season as she finished the last, with a win.
Sweden’s World number 1 carded a two-under-par 70 on Sunday to capture the 1.2 million dollar LPGA Mastercard Classic in Mexico City.
Sorenstam finished one stroke clear of her Swedish compatriot Helen Alfredsson and Seon Hwa Lee of South Korea.
Sorenstam has now won her last three season openers and four of her last five.
”This is a great event to start out the season,” Sorenstam said.
”I got off to a great start and I’m obviously very, very happy about that. I am very, very happy. To come here with high expectations to defend a title is always tough, but I thought I played really well this week and I’m very happy about that,” Sorenstam said.
Sweden failed to clinch gold at the World Indoor Athletics Championship in Moscow at the weekend. However , Pole Vaulter Alhaji Jeng did take silver on his World Championship debut , adding to Sweden’s two bronze medals won earlier. Sweden’s star names, Carolina Kluft, Kajsa Bergqvist and Christian Olsson were all absent.

Sweden’s Olympic Champion Anja Pärson won the penultimate World Cup slalom race of the season but her rival Janica Kostelic wrapped up the World Cup slalom title by finishing second. Pärson though closed the gap on the Croatian in the overall World Cup race, which will be decided in the final four events of the season ,here in Sweden, in Åre later this week.
