Media Follow-ups to Freivalds Resignation

Laila Freivalds and Prime Minister Göran Persson

The day after the resignation of Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds, the media here are filled with follow-up stories and editorials.

Freivalds was forced to step down after accusations that she had misled the press, and her boss, Prime Minister Göran Persson, over her personal involvement in her ministry’s pressure on an Internet hosting company to close an extreme right wing website.

An informal poll published in the daily “Dagens Nyheter” shows 85 percent of more than 34,000 respondents agreeing Freivalds should have resigned.
