UN Assembly President Named Swedish Foreign Minister
Senior U.N. official Jan Eliasson has been appointed foreign minister.
Eliasson is currently Chairman of the United Nation’s General Assembly.
He takes over after Laila Freivalds who resigned last Tuesday amid allegations that she lied about her involvement in shutting down a website that had posted satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
On Monday morning, Prime Minister Göran Persson told journalists that Aid Minister Carin Jämtin, who had originally been tipped for Freivalds’ job, would take on the role of deputy foreign minister. She will also serve as acting foreign minister until Eliasson assumes his duties on April 24.
The Prime Minister said, ”Jan Eliasson has a big international contact network and he will give Sweden a prominent role in international politics.”
Eliasson served as Sweden’s ambassador in Washington, state secretary in the foreign ministry and ambassador to the UN, before becoming the UN’s assembly president last September.
Sweden faces a general election in six months time.
