Swedes Detained in Iran

Published torsdag 30 mars 2006 kl 11.03

Iran has confirmed reports that two Swedish nationals have been detained over accusations they illegally photographed naval facilities in the Islamic republic.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry says its embassy in Tehran is ”working extensively” to secure the release of the two men, construction workers from western Sweden, who are being held in the southern port of Bandar Abbas.

The men are reportedly being treated well and have been allowed to speak with the Swedish embassy.

The Iranian investigation into their alleged crimes will continue throughout the year, possibly longer, with the men remaining in jail for the duration.
