Harsh Criticism for Government
Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson and five senior ministers came in for harsh criticism on Thursday from parliament for their slow response to the Asian tsunami.
A parliamentary commission said the Social Democratic leader ”bore overwhelming responsibility for the failings” in getting assistance to thousands of Swedes caught up in the tsunami.
His finance minister, foreign minister (who quit last week) and three other cabinet members also took their share of the blame.
About 500 Swedes were among the more than 200,000 people who died in the tsunami on December 26, 2004.
