Anders Wejryd New Archbishop
The Church of Sweden announced Thursday that Anders Wejryd has been elected the new Archbishop.
Wejryd won the election with 176 votes. His colleague, Ragnar Persenius, received 127.
Anders Wejryd became a priest in the Church of Sweden in 1972 and has been bishop of Växjö since 1995. He will replace Archbishop KG Hammar.
This is the first time an archbishop is chosen by the church itself.
Up until 2000, when the church was still state run, the archbishop was chosen by the government.
