Sweden to Strengthen Help to Darfur

Published fredag 31 mars 2006 kl 10.29
Carin Jämtin, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs

The Swedish Government has instructed the Swedish Rescue Services Agency to strengthen its health and medical care efforts in Darfur, Sudan.

The Swedish Rescue Services Agency’s task is part of EU support measures to the African Union (AU) and, through such means as training and advisory services will enhance the AU’s capacity to provide medical care for its staff.

Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs Carin Jämtin says that ”By strengthening the African Union’s capacity, Sweden will provide additional support to efforts to create peace in Darfur.”

Earlier this week Jämtin was blocked from a scheduled visit to the troubled Darfur province.

The Sudanese Embassy in Stockholm has apologised for the incident.
