Fighting Honor-Related Violence

The Swedish government has allocated a further 800,000 dollars for efforts to combat so-called honor-related violence.

The package includes special training for judges and court personnel, increased networking among hotlines for girls, and new programs in schools. Since 2003 the Swedish government has budgeted around 60 million dollars for programs dealing with honor-related violence.

The efforts have followed the murder of a young Kurdish woman, shot to death by her father, after she refused to give up her relationship with a Swede.
