Government Will Not Meet Hamas Member

Published fredag 21 april 2006 kl 12.28

The Swedish government says it will not meet with a member of the Hamas group scheduled to visit southern of Sweden in May.

According to a spokesman for Hamas’ parliamentary group, a member of Hamas will travel to Malmö as the guest of three local Palestinian organisations.

Sweden, in line with the rest of the European Union, does not have political contacts with the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority.

According to a foreign ministry spokesperson, no representative of the Swedish government will meet the representative, adding that the government was not involved in the visit.

Hamas is on the European Union’s and the United States’ lists of terrorist organisations and both have frozen assistance to the Palestinian Authority.
