Jan Eliasson Takes Over Foreign Ministry
Jan Eliasson, president of the United Nations General Assembly, takes over as Sweden’s Foreign Minister Monday.
He succeeds Laila Freivalds, who was forced to resign following controversies over pressure on an Internet site, and her slow response to the Asian tsunami disaster. Eliasson will continue to hold two jobs until his UN mandate runs out in September, days before Sweden’s next elections.
His first act as foreign minister was to welcome his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Störe, who arrived in Stockholm Monday for talks on what are described regional and international issues, including conflict management.
