Swedish-Only Ban Reversed

Published onsdag 26 april 2006 kl 11.19

A department manager at the Social Welfare office in Uppsala has been forced to back down after issuing an order forbidding employees from talking to each other in any language other than Swedish.

Around 20 languages are spoken by the staff, who complained the boss issued the ban because he couldn’t monitor what they were saying. He reversed the order after intervention by the staff union.

Ironically, the story comes just as an official report is about to be presented about supporting Swedish as a minority language in neighboring Finland.
