The United Nations Security Council has authorized a European Union military force to help UN peacekeepers in the Congo.

Sweden will take part, along with at least nine other EU countries. The mission is to insure security during presidential and parliamentary elections in June.

Most of the 1450 EU troops could be stationed outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and would deploy in the country only if invited by the UN mission there.
