Monday saw traditional May Day marches and speeches around Sweden by leaders of the Social Democrat and Left parties, and trade unions.

A “Reclaim the Streets” rally held without a permit in downtown Stockholm turned violent Monday evening. Many of the 900 participants smashed shop windows and clashed with police. Around 140 young people were taken into custody, and three were later charged with riotous violence.

However, according to reports there was less damage than in previous years.
