Swedes Arrested in Turkey

Published onsdag 3 maj 2006 kl 11.38

Two Swedish citizens have been reported arrested in Turkey.

The two, who are political activists of Kurdish origin, are said to have been taken into custody in a city in eastern Turkey, just before they planned to start a peace demonstration.

As they have dual citizenship, the Turkish authorities regard them as Turks and are under no obligation to contact the Swedish embassy.

Ironically the news comes as the Swedish Foreign Ministry has sent a press release announcing that King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia will be making an official visit to Turkey at the end of this month.
