Hamas Visit to Sweden Blocked

Published onsdag 3 maj 2006 kl 11.40
Hamas MP Salah al-Bardawil has been denied a visa

The day after a Swedish member of parliament invited members of the Palestinians’ ruling Hamas party to a meeting in Stockholm, their planned visit to Europe seems to have been blocked.

The French authorities have refused to grant visas, which bars them from entering the entire Schengen passport-free zone. Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson has refused to permit special visas.

However, the Hamas representatives will still visit Norway, which is not a member of the European Union.

In Stockholm last week Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan Gahr Störe said his government has not invited Hamas to Norway, but if they come there, his staff will meet them.
