Right and Left Extremists Clash

Published måndag 22 maj 2006 kl 11.34

There were several confrontations between extreme right wing and left wing groups around Stockholm during the weekend.

Around 20 people described by the police as right wing extremists tried to interfere with a illegal demonstration by the leftist group Anti-Fascist Action in the center of the city Sunday. On Saturday there was a fight between the two groups north of Stockholm.

Earlier in the day around 25 people demonstrated against an election rally by the xenophobic Sweden Democrat Party, and right wing extremists showed up at, but did not seriously disturb, a demonstration in favour of asylum-seekers outside offices of the Swedish immigration agency.

Meanwhile, in Kristianstad in southern Sweden, four people connected to the National Socialist Front were detained by the police Saturday night when they tried to interfere with a party arranged by the association of homosexuals in Sweden.
