Satellite to Forecast Earthquakes

Compass 2 Radio Frequency Analyzer

A satellite scheduled for launch Wednesday is carrying Swedish instruments which will hopefully help forecast earthquakes.

The Compass-2 satellite is being carried into space from a Russian submarine in the Barents Sea. The Radio Frequency Analyzer, developed jointly by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the Polish Academy of Sciences, will measure changes in the ionosphere, which appear before major earthquakes.

Swedish scientists say if the instruments perform as expected, they would be the first step in setting up a global warning system.
