Link Between Metabolic Syndrome and Heart Failure
Swedish researchers have discovered that the collective medical disorder known as the metabolic syndrome may be a risk factor for heart failure.
The study, led by Dr. Erik Ingelsson of Uppsala University, found that individuals with the syndrome have a cluster of heart disease and diabetes risk factors, such as excess body weight, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels.
The metabolic syndrome is based on the body mass index, along with several other factors such as high blood sugar. The work is based on more than 2000 men over the age of 50 and free of heart failure when the study started. The findings appear in the medical journal “Heart”.
