Figures for Church Subsidies Inaccurate
Swedish Radio News reports that several religious denominations here have turned in inaccurate membership statistics, as the basis for government subsidies.
One of the communities, the Estonian Lutheran Church, has counted everyone who has attended funerals as members. The Roman Catholic Church in Sweden admits it has trouble verifying 17,000 of its 100,000 claimed members.
Of the 18 denominations checked, 13 admitted deficiencies in maintaining accurate membership figures.
Every year religious groups here receive more than 5 million dollars in subsidies from the tax-payers, based on the number of members.
